History of Western Plains Chapter
Submitted
November 2007 by Mary Grubbs, President of Western Plains Chapter
Mike
Wodke organized the first Fiddlers, Pickers & Singers program with the
help of his parents-in-law, Mr & Mrs Ray Medford of Emporia, members
of the Flint Hills Chapter KOFP&S, Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. The
program was held on September 4, 1977 at the Lakin Grade School, in Lakin,
Kansas. There were fourteen amateur musicians and 138 who came to
listen. Promoters for the program were Mr & Mrs Mike Wodke and
Mrs Jim Ferrell. Mike Wodke
decided to start a chapter of the KOFPS Association in Lakin, Kansas.
On October 2, 1977 they
held their 2nd program at the Lakin Grade School and the following
officers were elected: President - Basilia Ferrell, Vice President -
Mike Carmichael, Secretary/Treasurer - Charlotte Wodke, Emcee - Butch
Anderson, Alternate Emcee - Mike Carmichael, State Board
Representative - Mike Wodke, and Alternate State Board Representative -
Basilia Ferrell. There were 25 who joined.
On October 10, 1977 a
petition was sent to KOFP&S State Secretary/Treasurer John E Gough,
Board of Directors to join KOFP&S. KOFP&S State Board of Directors voted December 4, 1977 at
their State Board Meeting in Blue Mound, Kansas to make Lakin a chapter of
the KOFP&S.
On January 8, 1978
President of the KOFP&S State Board Glenn Woolaway and son, flew to
Lakin from Topeka to accept Lakin officially as a chapter of KOFP&S,
which will be known as the Western Plains Chapter. 250 people came
to listen with 39 of them as performers.
The Western Plains Chapter
hosted a KOFP&S State Board meeting in July 1981 in Garden City,
Kansas and again on October 10, 1993 at the Veterans Memorial Building in
Lakin, Kansas.
The Western Plains Chapter
hosted the 1982 KOFP&S Convention on April 23, 24, and 25 in Garden
City, Kansas. It was the 11th convention of KOFP&S. In May
1987 the White Woman Basin and Western Plains Chapters hosted the
KOFP&S Convention in Scott City, Kansas.
