Conduct Annual Meetings so members can “have a say” in operation

Holding a convention increases how many trophies that the Chapter receives. 

In 1977 and 2004, Walnut Valley and De Soto, after receiving a record number of awards, split to form additional chapters. 

Convention started on Saturday and Sunday in 1972.

When was Friday night added?  1976

When did Contests start Friday morning?  1987 at Scott City

Why Annual Meeting on Saturday morning?  Easiest for most members to attend.

Why Seniors on Friday?  Most retired, so able to attend.

Why Adult Singing Friday night?  Provide good “show” to public when public can attend.

Why Kids Saturday afternoon?  Do not have to take kids from school.

Why the Band Contest Saturday night?  Provide good “show” to public when public can attend.

Why not have something Sunday afternoon?  We did: to showcase awardees to the public.  The intent was to attract the public.

About 2,000 different people have competed in over 4,500 different entries.
Most entries in any year  151 in year 2000 in Iola
Averaged 130 from 1989 to 2003 (added 7 contests)
2004-2005-2006-2007 averaged less than 100.
1978-2003 averaged 15-20 youth contestants: now down to 4-7.
In 1989 averaged 11 entries per contest.  Today we average about 6.

Contests are to showcase Kansas Oldtime Fiddlers, Pickers, & Singers  musicians.
KOFPS “shares” our music by allowing each performer to perform as they choose, and then performers go to the audience and listen to their peers.
