Where, I ask you, Where does the time go?  It seems like just a few weeks ago it was Christmas time, now here we are again.  I do hope that everyone has their Holidays all planned and have a wonderful time.   I still have things to finish.  Those of you who know how I love to decorate for Christmas will understand.  I got a late start due to having to work on the really warm pretty days and now and playing catch-up on days with the cold and wind,. not the ideal situation. Anyway, enough of my whining, on to business.
I have been saddened to here of the troubles that some of the chapters have been having lately, for the last several months.   In fact, by the time this newsletter comes out we may be down to 18 or even 17 chapters by Jan.  from the 19 we are right now.    I cannot say that I like the Idea, but I understand the stress that these chapters are in right  now myself.   While Yates Center is doing well and fine right now, it sure isn't what it was just five years ago when we were having 100 people at our Thanksgiving dinner, and an average of 75 attendees at a regular meeting.   Now we're happy with 40 to 50 if we get that .   Luckily, we are and seem to be bringing in new people too
Unfortunately that's not been the case for some chapters and they are foundering.  IF  you can, and know of a chapter that's having trouble, PLEASE attend and when you can help with a donation,  and if nothing else, help SET- UP and CLEAN-UP, if you're  able.   This may not seem important to you, but is, I assure you, one reason for some chapters faltering.  Most officers of these chapters are getting up there and while they enjoy the office, usually they are the ones setting things up before anyone else arrives and are the last ones out putting things up and cleaning up when everyone else has packed up their few things and gone home.
Now, don't misunderstand me, just stop and think before you leave, just ask if there's anything you can do to help before you go.  I assure you that there is usually some little item that you can do that won't really slow you down in the process and will be of great help to those who need a little help .   If we all help a little then the burden isn't quite so much to just a few.   That's really all I am saying.
With that I want to wish everyone a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR .  Let us pray that this year is better than last, or at the very least not worse.

Hello All you good KOFPS people.
I was down from Oct. 9th until about 28th and only had been out of bed to be dragged to Doctor, MRI & Epidural shots.  Judy drove me to St. Francis Kansas to brother David's Oct. 30th after epidural shot.  It helped a lot.   I couldn't play guitar to practice on Saturday.  Judy drove me to my other brothers (Leon) in Indianola, Nebr. Nov 1 and then to Shriner's meeting in McCook on Sunday Nov 2.  They got me on stage and I sat on my music stool with guitar. Brother David played piano with me and David, Judy & I performed and sang for 45 minutes.  Made it through and felt better.  I had this booked for 1 1/2 years ahead and was not about to miss it.  Gave out several CD's and they were such a success that when we got home they called and said Shriner's needed more CD's since I didn't have enough when we were there---When could we come back for another performance?  Judy mailed them 12 more CD's..  My brother Leon was Grand Master in McCook last year.
Judy has the van all packed with just a few more items to put in (Music equipment, guitars--music- stool etc.) Food that we are taking along with O'Malley the cat and his food, litter box and etc..  Judy will be driving so it will take us about 3 days to get there.  I think I will need O'Malley's pill to make him calm down while Judy drives. Ha Ha! Judy said O'Malley doesn't need the pill as he rode just fine coming back from Texas the last of March this year.  Judy called Doctor for my morphine prescription this morning as I ran out today.  I will get my last epidural shot this Thursday.  We leave early Sunday morning for San Juan.
I regret that I couldn't get the Vice Presidents job done as it should have been this year but with better health, I could have been a ball of fire.  God be with the next V.P.  I want to thank everyone for the chance I had at that position again. We sure missed going to Lakin for the last Board meeting.  Thanks to Nadine Johnson for the power chair as it keeps me getting around better.  I just hope my health improves but at 69 + I have had a very good life even though I've had lots of pain and set backs with a bad spinal disease for the last 52 years. The Lord has blessed me with being able to still get around.  Most people don't talk about their health but I'm a complainer. Lots of people are not so lucky and are worse off than I.
Marvin Simonton is having knee surgery Tuesday Dec. 2 and we wish him a speedy recovery.
I have gone to find myself.  If I get back before I return, please keep me here.  Do you think it is the pills I'm on?  Ha Ha
Keith Wright Vice President
On Nov 10th we became Great grandparents and we both went to hospital and took pictures.  Joshua Stahl Kuhr 7 lbs 15 ozs 20 inches long was born by our grand daughter Bridget.
Some of you might remember her when she was little and came to Coffeyville State Convention and sang.  It was a happy time for her and she will always remember it.  She is 19.  We had our Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year with house last Saturday with our son and his family, Jo, Mackenzie, and Michael.  Our grand daughter Bridget and her family; Bridget, Joshua and Buddy.  Great grandma Judy fixed all the dinner and gave out all the presents.  It was a great time with 4 generations present.
I got to sing and perform at our regular chapter meeting. I had a great time.
Next time I send notes for the next 4 months will be from South Texas.  Hope to see you-all next April at the convention.
  WANDA SMITH AWARD NOMINEE
OSAWATOMIE CHAPTER
The Osawatomie Chapter Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers would like to nominate Florence Harclerode for the Wanda Smith Award. Although Florence is a non performer on stage she is constantly working to promote KOFP&S. She is always at our chapter meetings sometimes giving rides to the elderly so they can attend. We can always count on Florence; she is early to set up and stays to help clean up. Anytime or anything you ask of her she is willing ro help. She travels around the area with her husband. She is always smiling, cheerful and very friendly.
Florence is a long time member of the Osawatomie Chapter and is one of our greatest encouragers. She is always there with a kind word and she has a heart of gold when dealing with the elderly. We are proud to nominate her for the Wanda Smith Award.

I have been having problems getting on the website due to getting a new computer that runs with Vista.  Had to finally hook the old computer back up in order to access the pages of the website.  Once you get used to something almost working smoothly - somebody has to change it and you have to start all over from scratch figuring it out.  I have also had my hands full taking care of David August's mother who is 91 years old.  She fell towards the end of September and was in the hospital then the nursing home for about a month while I was on vacation in New Mexico.  She was released from the nursing home about four days after I got home and I haven't had much free time to give the website the attention that it needs.  Sifting through all the spam would be a lot easier if folks would put KOFPS at the beginning of the subject line on your e-mails!  A Great Big Thank You goes to Glenda Colson Western Plains Chapter State Board Representative for sending pictures from the October State Board Meeting.

NOTE FOR COMPUTER REPS:  Please provide me a list of 2009 Officers for your chapters.  I do not want to post misspelled names.  Thank You

Please remember to put KOFPS and your Chapter name in the Subject Line of your e-mails - Thanks  = It takes a lot of time to sift through all the spam to find valid KOFPS information.  I sort it by subject and find all the KOFPS marked messages very easily!!!

First Saturday

Columbus Chapter
Diane Larsen

  WHERE:  Cherokee Co. Hospitality Center,
516 North Kansas, Columbus, KS 66725
  WHEN:  2:00pm
Our November program was awesome!  We had only 11 musicians and the total attendance was 29.  Everyone was delighted with the performances of our newest youth members; Edith Sigler is 8 and Glenn Sigler is 9 years.  Edith also sang a song for us.  They both play the fiddle and are so talented. They live in Joplin, Missouri and we want to thank their grandparents, William and Elizabeth Ross, for attending our program and bringing their grandchildren. We also want to thank all the other musicians who attend our programs and perform for everyone.
Winners of the 50-50 drawing were Ruth Ann James, Dovie Neal, and Emma Lynn.
Our next program will be Saturday, December 6th. Our programs are held at the Cherokee County Hospitality Center, 516 North Kansas at 2 PM. We will be electing officers at our December program. If any member is running for an office contact Diane Larsen. We are now accepting membership dues for 2009.

Walnut Valley Chapter
Nita Simonton

  WHERE:  320 South A St,

            Arkansas City, KS 67005
  WHEN:  5:00pm
The Walnut Valley Chapter met on November 1st. There were 32 attending.  The evening started with a jam session at 5:00 and the  program started at 5:30. There were only 12 sign-ups for the program.  Two performers were first time attendees.  They were Betty Ransford and Don Gaskill.  Betty is the mother of Norman Ransford.  She, April and Marva sang a trio of a gospel song that was enjoyed by all and brought tears to April's eyes as she remembered the times when she was a little girl and sang with grandma.  I bet there are a lot of grandmas out there that would enjoy singing with there grandchildren if we could get more of them to come.  I know Marvin enjoys singing and playing with his grand children.
Our other guest, Don Gaskill, played guitar and sang some great old time songs.  He has promised to come back.  He had been invited by  David Matson to come join us and we were happy he did.  Thanks David, keep bringing us performers.
At 6:00 we took a break and we enjoyed all the good food that everyone had brought.    Those members who shared their talent Saturday night were:  Marvin, James Osborn, Don Gaskill, Dixie Mowbray,  Lee Bennett, Karna Burr, Thelma and Pete Coli, David Matson, April Tarrant, Marva and Norman Ransford, and Betty Ransford.  Dance music was provided  by  a make up band of Pete & Thelma, Karna, David, Don G. and the Ransfords and April.   They all played some great dance numbers that kept the couples on the floor most of the night.  Pat and Jim Lundy had left  for Arizona.  We will miss them this winter but I am sure Pat will keep in practice in Arizona.  The Redmon's are there and probably have some jams set up.  It is nice that some of our members can get together in other places besides here in Kansas.
The Walnut Valley float was a hit for the Arkalalah Parade on  Oct 25.  They passed out flyers that brought in some visitors and brought up a lot of questions about what we are.  Those that attended this evening said they will be coming back!  Lets hope so.  Good work guys!
There will be a holiday dinner at the December meeting.  The meat will be cooked by Marva, YUM YUM!  We will be missing next months meeting as Marvin is having his knee replaced on December 2.  We plan to make it for January.
We are still looking for new officers for next year.  Hope there are those of you out there that will step up to the task.  We know you all enjoy our old time music, and the company of friends that enjoy it and want to see Walnut Valley continue on.
Hope all of you can bring a friend or two or three or more along with you next month and get them to join us again and again at the next time and place.
Until next month continue to enjoy and play the oldtime music and keep a happy tune in your thoughts.

We never know what our weather will be out here so am always happy to see people out and about and want to come to spend time with us each month.
Thanks to all who brought good food. It is always enjoyed and usually nothing left to take back home. Thanks to all who help set up and take down the tables, chairs, and equipment. It takes all of us to make it work and not put a burden on just a few people. All are appreciated.
We always meet on the 2nd Sunday of each month, weather permitting. Signup starts at 1:00 or 1:30 and the music starts at 2:00, so come again and bring a friend and let's increase our membership this next year too, like we did this year.

Second Friday

Spring Hill Chapter
Sylvia Landis

Jean Cecini
  WHERE:  Spring Hill Civic Center,
401 N Madison, Spring Hill, KS 66083
  WHEN:  6:00pm, Potluck @ 5:30pm

Our only meeting this month was on Nov. 14th, 2008. We aren't able to get the building the fourth Friday this month or in Dec. so, we will not have the Jam in Dec. on the fourth Friday. We had ___ in attendance and ___ performers and most seemed to have a pleasant evening.

However, something was brought to my attention last night, that made me think. A couple was sad that there wasn't enough dance music last night, so they left a little early. I told them not to give up us, just try again, because usually there are a lot of songs that encourage a dance! I know that we always have a food pot luck, but it occurred to me last night that we also take pot luck in a lot of other ways! We always have a different mix of people to perform and to listen, we get a mix of types of music and from a wide range of years, most have different people they sit and chat with, and there are always new needs and challenges that people bring to share, because of what is going on in their lives. Indeed, it is never exactly the same. I crave variety, but don't dance, however, I love watching others dance and enjoy a wide range of types and styles of music, but most of all I love the people and their needs.

We found out that Mitch Long & Cathy Blackwell, just got engaged recently, and we shared that joy with them! However now Cathy has some series health issues concerning cancer and needs our long term prayers; Avis Armentrout is having some heart issues, so remember her as well. Jean Cecini was refused help by her insurance, and will pursue some avenues to get some help in the future. Charlene Prudden had a hip replacement with other complications and will be in recovery a very long time. Dave Blackwell was ill, so he and Pat couldn't be with us this time. Becky Keeney has continuing health issues so her and Jim haven't been able to be with us for some time, and he loves being here so much! If there are others, please let Jean know, so she can send a card, we try to show we care if we know, but of course we aren't perfect and sometimes it just doesn't get done even when we find out something is wrong. I know I'm guilty of hearing some sad news and forgetting to get it to Jean so she can act upon it and I'm probably not the only one that lets things slip, it seems I get worse about this flaw instead of better. I hope you are improving in big and small ways, it is important, so may God help us all!

The good news is that Dennis Joeckel is doing a little better, Jean Blanton was well enough to be back with us last night and that meant Rich could come as well,  Gene Sawyer continues to improve from hip surgery and many of us are well enough to make it or just hangin' in there!

We had one new performer last night, Rich Renner (a friend of Chuck Yates), he did a really good job, hope he comes back! We were privileged to have 4 of the Gough family perform for us last night. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gough & son John, and his wife Jean Gough; it is the first time this family unit has performed for us! Another fun thing was I got to bring one cake from Eldon & I's 50th Wedding Anniversary to share with the folks. The real date was Feb. 14, but since I was very ill, our children  postponed the celebration until lately.

It can help us all so much, all year long, to find and express our thankfulness for the things for which we can be truly thankful. It takes the focus off all the negative things around us that we must see and hear about. I do have many things I can be thankful about, how about you?  If you don't, talk to me, I can help you look and find them.   Smile, Sylvia

Third Sunday

Iola Chapter
Don Brooks

  WHERE:  505 N Buckeye St,

Iola, KS 66749
  WHEN:  1:00pm
We had 6 players and around 15 in the audience. We had planned to elect officers, but didn't have enough present to do so. Also I learned today (11-21) that Harold Evans, our Vice President, had passed away and was buried today. He will be missed.
We seem to be losing more and more members. I hear that the Blue Mound chapter is thinking of dissolving. To be voted on in December. Iola would like to invite any BM members to transfer to our chapter if they would like to. Richard said he would like to see the older members that aren't able to make it to the meetings still be able to continue getting their Newsletters as Lifetime members. Don't know if we can carry that, but maybe we can work something out to where the Lifetime members pay us what we have to pay the State each year. ($3.)
I don't know if there is a limit to how many offices one person can hold. We have several of us holding 2 or more so please if you are an Iola member try to show up in December (or our next meeting, you'll get this after our December one) to vote, or get elected

Gary and Maryann Marquardt and Bill and Dustin Hunt are recovering from illness and we were happy to welcome them.  A big Thank You to Jo Brennon for being our Kitchen Lead.  She pulled together a wonderful meal with the help of volunteers.  She and Sue Kroll, Clean-up Lead really were excellent in their duties.  Our volunteers are so helpful and greatly appreciated.  Hopefully we can find something that will interest each member so they can give of their talents.
December 18th we will have our Christmas program.  Please plan to join us and bring your young ones.  Happy Holidays!

Third Friday

De Soto Chapter
Sandy Hale

  WHERE:  32905 W 84th St,

De Soto, KS 66018
  WHEN:  5:00pm, Jam 3:00pm
Delpha Danner = Desoto's Thanksgiving meeting had an attendance count of 67 with 20 performers. Thanks to Member Steve Prudden of Steve's Meat Market, we had lots of delicious turkey and ham. Other members and guests provided mouth-watering side dishes. Several musicians kept us entertained during the jam session.    After dinner 14 chapter members elected Doug Danner President, Terry Runyan Vice President, Herman Wittenberg Treasurer, Suzanne Danner Secretary with Bonida (Bonnie) Thornton as her assistant, Leo Shaw MC, and Terry Runyan Assistant MC. Jesus Velasquez remains as State Board Representative and Darryl Danner as alternate. Leo announced that Santa Fe Trails will co-sponsor the 2010 Convention with Desoto. However, he did not entertain any discussion on the matter. Fund raising was mentioned, with a raffle planned for a number of items.

Vice President Terry Runyan led us in singing "Happy Anniversary" to Rocky and Betty Mason, and Rich Blanton sang "Look At Us" in tribute to their 52 years of marriage. We welcomed Jim Keeney back after a long absence. It was good to hear our usual members perform as well as visitors from First City Leavenworth and Spring Hill. We had a wonderfully appreciative audience as well.

A big thanks to all who donated time, money, and effort to make the evening a success.    We plan to start having raffles at the Dec. 19 meeting, so if you have items to donate, bring them. Also, come prepared to purchase raffle tickets and have some fun waiting for your number to be called. It is surprising how lucky a person can be, and the money all goes to help our chapter!

Flint Hills Chapter

Joan Hoover, Asst, Sec.
  WHERE:  313 W 4th Ave,

            Emporia, KS 66801
  WHEN:  1:30pm
Joan Hoover Secretary = The November meeting of the Flint Hills Chapter was held on a beautiful, sunny fall day with the temperature in the 60's. We had a really good crowd with 46 attending and there were 18 musicians sharing their talents with us. There were guests from Herington, Topeka and Yates Center. We do enjoy having visitors here to share the fun with us.
President Maurice conducted a brief business meeting. He reported the funds in the checking account and also mentioned that there were several months when we did not meet our expenses. The rent on the hall will increase in January. We are still operating within our funds. He and Twila are planning to travel a lot in the coming year and so he declined to be president again. Wayne Stoll was elected president. Joan Hoover was elected to be secretary for the coming year. Bruce Hoover will be vice-president again. The meeting was adjourned so the music could be resumed.
Come and enjoy our music with us when you can.
