| I
want to start by saying a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Glenda Colson and the Entire
Western Plains Chapter for making all the arrangements and hosting the
October State Board Meeting. I understand what a great undertaking it is and inconvience
it can be, but you all did a great job.
Also on that note I want to thank all the Reps that made the effort and took the trip out west. I think now, if not before, we all have a whole lot more respect for Glenda and the Reps before her for going out of their way to make the trip this way every three months. It was a very Productive Board meeting. A lot of things were discussed and last months newsletter had the minutes which covered most of it in detail. I was very happy. Unfortunately, Our State-Vice President, was unable to go because of health. We missed you Keith Wright get better soon. The next board meeting will be in El Dorado, at the White Eagle Chapter in January on the first Sunday. Please try to be there, we will have many things coming to a vote and we need everyone's input. Thank You, Blaine "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want." " If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?" |
Hello I really went down this last month. Sorry we missed out on the State board meeting in Lakin. I will be interested to learn how many were there, board members, musicians and guests. I had X-rays, MRI's, Epidural shots and lots of Doctors visits. Sure was hard just forcing myself up with all the pain while trying to drag my right leg around. I sure feel for those who have strokes. Doctor has me on 5 pain medications, none that lets me get out of bed very much. The bad ones are: morphine, UltramER and tramadol. Celebrex and Gabapentin are not so bad. My next epidural shots will be Nov 13th and I hope they will continue to help. Doctor said the first shots would take 6 to 10 days to work. I was disappointed that they didn't just heal me right now but with the Lord's help I will get back up and at 'em soon. Judy reported to me that Cow Creek had their music program today and about 55 in attendance with 14 musicians and performers. Several regulars were out of town but we had a couple of new people come. I missed our program also. I sure would like to perform again but time will tell. I get to the computer as much as I can stand to so that helps me dull the pain. Judy & I still plan to leave as soon as we can for San Juan,Texas the early part of December but she has to load the van and me and drive most of the way unless these shots get me better before then. I figure my pain Doctors down there can treat me. I know I won't get to play as much or be on the go like previous years but I'll go as long as I can. Keep us in your prayers. May God Bless until we meet again.. |

| We did not have a regular October monthly meeting because we played on the square for Columbus Days festivities. A special thank you to all the musicians from the Columbus Chapter that participated in the Columbus Days festivities on Saturday, October 11th. There were 17 musicians of our chapter that played on the square. We also had 2 guests that asked if they could sing with the group. We were really happy that our newest youth members, Glen & Edith Sigler, played with our group. The largest crowd around the tent was when they were playing. We are happy to announce that the first weekend in October, Edith competed in the Oklahoma state fair and won first place for the junior fiddle competition for 8 years old and younger. She had also received this same award last year. Our next regular program will be Saturday, November 1st. | |||||

| The Walnut Valley Chapter met on October 4th at the Senior Center in Ark City with 27 attending. The evening started with a jam session at 5:00. program at 5:30, and at 6:00 we enjoyed all the good food that everyone had brought. Then the balance of the program was finished. There were 15 sign-ups for the programs. Those members who shared their talent Saturday night were: Bill Miller, Warren Rouse, James Osborn, Pat, Lundy, Dixie Mowbray, Lee Bennett, Karna Burr, Joyce Childs, Thelma and Pete Coli, David Matson, Delbert Peters, Marva and Norman Ransford, and Jim Redmon. Dance music was provided first by Pete Coli Country, Pete & Thelma, Karna, David, and Delbert. The second group was Jim Redmon, Dixie, Pat, Lee, Norman & Marva and Joyce. They all played some great dance numbers that kept the couples on the floor most of the night. It was nice to have Jim & Maureen Redmon with us. They have been here for several weeks visiting and will be leaving for Arizona on Tuesday. We were also surprised by a visit from Henry & Nancy Fetters of Blackwell OK. They had been long time members in the past. Another family of long time members, George & Thelma Buckman, their son Larry and his wife Rosa of Hutchinson and their daughter Jan of Emporia also came for a visit. It was nice to see all of these visitors along with our regular attendees. Please come visit when you are down this way. Marvin, Jack, Dixie & Pat all played for the Sun Chasers over in Winfield on the 6th and were happy to see Bill & Crystal Hill. Although we haven't seen them in awhile it was good to get to visit. They are looking good although Crystal was having some trouble getting around. They weren't having trouble playing and singing though. They led everyone in God Bless America. Great seeing you all. Hope you make it to the convention next year! A meeting was held after the dancing and the putting away of the PA System and the kitchen to decide on a special project. It was decided that Walnut Valley would put together a float for the Arkalalah Parade on Oct 25. Hope the news letter comes out in time as a reminder for everyone to come watch if they aren't playing on it. We are still looking for new officers for next year. Hope there are those of you out there that will step up to the task. We know you all enjoy our old time music, and the company of friends that enjoy it and want to see Walnut Valley continue on. Hope all of you can bring a friend or two or three or..ten along with you next month and get them to join us again and again at the next time and place. We will be missing Jim & Pat next month as they are leaving the end of October for Arizona too. Be careful to all of the snow birds that will be leaving us for the winter. Until next month continue to enjoy and play the oldtime music and keep a happy tune in your thoughts.. |

October 5th, KV Chapter started off the usual chores getting set up for
the program. Other activities took a toll on our attendance until Mid
afternoon. We made it a fun day anyway. We were short on local musicians due to October Fest and Band Festivals. So the visitors that helped us were Wayne Stoll and Louise FH, Harold Bolz NE, Leo Shaw and wife DES and all the faithful musicians of KV. Norma Murphy and Dee Olson had extra chores this month. Gene and I had a busy week before the meeting. Norma gave a cake (free to all) for Gene and My 60th Wedding Anniversary. We attend John and Mar Davis 50th Anniversary in Tucumseh, Kansas October 4th. Joy Katherns is recuperating at her home in Sabetha, Kansas. Ruth Jones has been recuperating per Walter Norris - God Bless Them. Glenn and Mildred Woolaway enjoyed a months vacation visiting Son and wife in Illinois - ending up in North Carolina visiting their daughter and family. They also attended and enjoyed "NAS Car Races". Cooperation is spelled with 2 letters "WE" Your always welcome to Kaw Valley Chapter the 1st Sunday each month - 300 NE 43rd, Topeka, Kansas 1:00pm. |

Hi
Everyone - I had a great time at the State Board Meeting. I saw Curtis
Young. I haven't seen him since 1985 he said. It's so good to see all the
people! Blaine will report about the board meeting in the notes for the
meeting. I spent a few days in the hospital this week. Things are going well now though! I can't drive because I'm taking pain pills for a while. I hope we have good attendance at Blue Mound. A new month is already here! How the days and years go by! Carolyn Watson I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I am thinking of you. Now I will leave the chapter news for Mary Grosshart. |

had a wonderful time the weather was great and lots of turkey dinner.
There were 14 performers and 75 in attendance. There was lots of food,
music and dancing for everyone. Agnes Dry invited some friends. They had a great time and said they would be back. Thanks to Agnes for advertising. She does a great job. The Hills were here from Yates Center Chapter. Harriet and Noble were back and the Gees. Blaine had to work so he missed out on the turkey. Thanks to all who helped in any way. We will have the State Board Meeting in January so whatever you bring put a little extra in it. We will have fried chicken and will need food there by noon. The board members will perform first so they can get to their homes. Our officers will be here at 8:00 am and have coffee and some breakfast. We will have our election of officers in November and will be taking membership also. We still have several members that are having health problems. So keep them in your prayers. My thought for the day - Itching for what you want does not do much good. You have got to scratch for it. See you all in November and bring along a friend. . |

Wow,
what a great turnout for the Oct. 10, 2008 meeting! A lot of our own
people who had missed for one reason or another were back and besides that
a group of about a dozen who usually go to another jam down south joined
us, since their's was canceled for the evening. We had some new guests and
some of the other group had never been here before either, so we hope they
had a good time and will come back when they can. This group really seemed
to enjoy looking at our get aquainted books with the pictures and names of
people from a lot of groups. |

Jennifer Ray was missing due to a health problem. We are happy to have three visiting musicians, Destony Larimore, Her Father, Don Hurd and Jack Mcnickle. They have also joined our chapter. Several admitted to getting older this month. Chub Red, Ruby Fiscus, Jack Gartner, Alene Ruttgen, Irene Lassen, Maxine Conner and Pat Fernandez. A nominating committee was appointed to select next years officers. Where did the year go? Thanksgiving is next month and Christmas is just around the corner. Time flies when you having fun. . |

you enjoyed your trip to Western Kansas. Hope you also had a safe trip
home, but do come back again. We had 67 in attendance on Sunday and 29 of those provided us with a lot of good music also. Of the 29 people, 11 of those came from the Eastern Chapter. Thanks for staying longer to play and sing for us too. Now when Glenda or any of us show up you know we have driven a long ways and time to get there. Lots of miles from the East side of Kansas to the West side of Kansas, but it's a pretty interesting trip too. Several of us attended the jam session that Blaine had at the Motel where they were staying. We all enjoyed the music there too. Those that came from back east were Blaine and Kenny Gee form Yates Center, Marvin and Nita Simonton from Walnut Valley, Marvin and Doris Gough and Nola York form Blue Mound, Don Brooks from Iola, Jesus and Donna Valesquez from DeSoto, Hazel Moore, Maryann barry, Dale and Barbara Moore all from Santa Fe Trail, Rob and Donita Calahan from Osawatomie, John Gough from Northeast, Carol Yates from Springhill and Bill and Ferol Wagner from Flint Hills Chapters. We enjoyed having each and everyone of you and do come back again. Lunch was served to all as noon and the food was delicious. I want to say "Thank You" to all who prepared food and helped in any way to put this on. Everyones help is greatly appreciated. "Thanks" to all the fellows who put all the tables away when it's over and the equipment too. We couldn't do it with out you. I personally had a great day and hope everyone else enjoyed themselves too. Our next program will be November 9th, same time, same place. Please come and bring a friend to enjoy the afternoon with us. Hope all of you had a Happy Halloween. |

Center, 109 Delaware Street. (3rd Thursday) There were 72 persons in
attendance with 18 musicians. Our guest musicians are joining our chapter
in November. We held our quarterly meeting and discussed the
Officers up for election which will be in November. Bill Hunt gave a report on his Son Dustin. He is very ill and will have surgery at KU. On a happier note, Bill and Dustin Hunt where inducted into the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame in August. They have been playing country music at festivals around the country for at least 10 years. Dustin was recently recognized by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for his work representing Kansas in the world of country music. Dustin performs many Hank William songs and won a look alike contest through the TV station TNN. Bill plays the guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin and lap steel guitar. We are very proud to have them in our Chapter. Gary and Maryann Marquardt came and joined in the music. Everyone was so pleased to see them. Gary is doing fine and did a little singing. Thanks to Don Spain Sr. for his efforts to get them here.. Scotty Brezgiel was out of town so we want to said a big Thank You to Marshall and Jill Hill for running the sound equipment. Our sound people are taken for granite and we don't say Thanks enough. Also, a big Thanks for the Volunteers, We have so many and they are appreciated. It was a great evening. Hopefully the street will be completed by our next 3rd Thursday meeting. Young Madeline Gay is showing promise after having started violin lessons. Also youth member Katelin Anderson sang. Carlene Seaborn dusted the piano and treated us to some music during the jam session. Several members from First City Leavenworth added to our program. We enjoyed a delicious potluck meal followed by a brief business meeting attended by 13 members where Jesus Velasquez gave a report on the state board meeting. He informed us of plans for state board meetings to be cut from four to two per year due to increased fuel costs. He gave us the disheartening news that five chapters are on the verge of folding and passed out a flyer detailing urgent financial needs of the organization and asking for volunteer musicians for a fund raising effort. There was also discussion regarding the 2010 convention. Plans for the November 21st regular chapter meeting call for the chapter to furnish turkey and ham to be purchased from Steve's Meat Market for the potluck. Election of officers will be held for 2009 during that meeting. We hope to have the majority of our members present. Sales of 2009 memberships began with eight adult members and one youth member. Memberships cost $12 for adults and $1 for youths under age 18. We expect a large turnout in November so would appreciate extra help with food service and cleanup afterward. Thank you to all who helped in October. | |||||
