From KOFP&S State Secretary
Maryann Barry

Well I`m almost ready for the trip out west for the Oct Board meeting.  I  understand that ALL 10 rooms did get reserved and that we can use the room they have no charge Sat nite for a jam.  I realize this trip has been hard on some of us to plan, But we have very dedicated board members from this chapter who has made EVERY meeting out this way since being Voted in and we need to show some appreciation to that fact and let Western Plains know we care.
On the same note however, the economy has everybody concerned right now and maybe it`s time to consider going to Two Full  Board meetings such as Oct. and  April, and have only Executive Board meetings in July and January .    This would require a change to the by-laws, but with things going the way they are, the Executive board, FOUR people could get together fairly more easy than the whole board and would cut down on the expenses of the other board members.  This is one thing that I intend to discuss at the Oct board meeting.
Just keep and open mind

Well it is almost time for another State Board meeting.  Hope you made your reservations at the American Motel - 3020 E Kansas Ave in Garden City & played music Saturday night (7  - 9 p.m.) before going over to Lakin for board meeting Sunday October 12 at 10 a.m.  Board meeting will be long over by the time you read this.  Hope you-all enjoyed the time out there.  I want to thank every one that attended the Board meeting.  By the time you read this it is old news.  Your dedication helps make this organization a success.
I need to make a correction as to where Cow Creek Chapter in Hutchinson is meeting.  We meet at 300 E 10th at Farris School in Hutchinson thru April of 2009.  We still meet every 4th Sunday each month except in the month of December 2008 when the school has another commitment...Cow Creek Chapter will meet the 2nd Sunday there at Faris school. Dec 14th.  We want to secure a new place to meet starting in May 2009 before Judy & I leave for South Texas this year.  We plan to leave for Texas the first week in December.  The news notes reported we still meet a Delos Smith Center and that might be why our attendance was down this month of September (I think 32).  Everyone who attended had a great time but we missed several regulars.  I am back on ULTRAM-ER, a dangerous narcotic that helps me walk without my cane or wheel chair.  I had to replace the wheel chair plastic rims for aluminum ($197.98) as the plastic would break when driving outdoors.   I only take pill at 6 a.m. every morning and it masks most pain most of the day.  I do get dizzy still and eyes won't focus.  Boy I sure hate that as I can't girl watch without seeing double.  HA Ha  To crush up the pill or cut it in half (100 MG) means sudden death as per instructions so I take precaution to not drink hot liquids when taking this pill.
Thanks to the Osawatomie Chapter for hosting the 2009 State Convention April 24 thru 26th, 2009.  Please contact Darlena Colwell  785-242-1845 for sponsor a trophy $25.00ea or scorekeeper Tony Elrod 915-856-8902.  I know it will be mentioned again in this news letter but maybe if it gets in more than once more people won't miss reading about it and sponsor trophies.
I will leave you with this joke I enjoyed.  A grandpa was pushing his grandson in a shopping cart at grocery store.  The grandson was screaming and throwing a fit.  The old man said; "It will be alright, Albert, we will be home soon."  Up and down every isle the same thing.  When I got the check out counter, there they were ahead of me.  The grandson was still screaming and the old man was still saying; "It will be alright, Albert, we will be home soon."  A woman behind me said to the old man; "Sir, I want to complement you about being so calm with that child Albert."   The old man turned around with tears in his eyes and said; " His name is John!  I'm Albert!" ....(Don't you just love us old people?)
Hello again to all - Hope you are enjoying this beautiful Fall weather. It is that time of year again when thing get busy for KOFP&S especially your chapter secretary so treat her kind.

The board members were to go back to their chapters and discuss the suggestion and report back to the board.

Marvin Gough, Rob Callahan and one other person were put on a committee to discuss a change on picking judges for the convention. They are to get the correct plans set out and bring back before the state board for approval.

Well finally getting an article for the news letter I hope.  We didn't have a July meeting so no news and then for August I guess our internet supplier was off line for awhile and our e-mails were going out but not to the addresses but to somewhere between them and us so we'll try for September.  We met on September 6th, a nice day.   There were only 27 attending since it was finally such a nice day and alot of things going on but we all had a good time with the 11 sign-ups for the programs.  We had a few of our faithful members out.  April and the kids were busy closing on a new house and came in for just a minute all excited.  Good luck on the move.  Stan Childs had a bout with virtigo and didn't dare try to make the drive.  I have talked to Joyce since and he is doing much better now.  The Hale's and Matson's weren't there and I hope they are all well.  Hope to see them all back and healthy.  Jack Kelsey who had by-pass surgery during the convention has healed up well and is back to doing the yard work and all the other fun stuff as well as playing his guitar.  Glad your on the right track Jack!     We did have a new couple  join us.  Delbert Peters brought them to us.  They are Christine and Bob Flottman.  Bob plays a good harmonica and stepped up to fill some space our regs left empty.  We hope they keep coming back.  Everyone who came brought some great food and we sure enjoyed it about halfway through the sign up program.  We usually eat about 6:00 weather we are done with the program or not.  We then return to the program and finish it before drawing numbers for the band performances.  This time with few musicians and few dancers we had a jam band. They were Marva & Norman Ransford, Delbert and Bob Flottman, Pat, Dixie, Marvin & Lee, and Pete Coli and Karna Burr.  They all played some great dance numbers that kept the couples on the floor most of the night.  After dancing we all stayed to help put away the PA System and the kitchen.  We sure appreciate their help.
We will be looking for new officers for next year.  Hope there are those of you out there that will step up to the task.  We know you all enjoy our old time music, and the company of friends that enjoy it and want to see Walnut Valley continue on.  Hope all of you can bring a friend or two or three or....ten along with you next month and get them to join us again and again at the next time and place.  Until then continue to enjoy and play the oldtime music and keep a happy tune in your thoughts.

Second Friday

Spring Hill Chapter
Sylvia Landis

Jean Cecini
  WHERE:  Spring Hill Civic Center,
401 N Madison, Spring Hill, KS 66083
  WHEN:  6:00pm, Potluck @ 5:30pm

Well, it seems like this year is really zooming by, but it has been a good year so far at Spring Hill. We are blessed with 63 members to date, which includes a wide variety of performing talents and there never seems to be a lack of great help to get all the things done to make our monthly KOFPS (2nd Friday) meeting and Jam (4th Friday) get together happen! My husband, Eldon, and I haven't been much help this year, him with a blood clot problem now and me with a back issue earlier this year, but all runs smooth like a well oiled machine even though different ones take turns with health issues. It is a real blessing that the work load is shared, because the burden of the responsibility isn't as heavy (no friction) so that people don't wear out. We have great set up and tear down assistance, folks who buy or prepare food  for the meal, & kitchen helpers for the meal serving and clean up. Julie makes sure the supplies get here and the coffee gets made, Ray is here for sound and equipment set up, our MC's Larry and Johanna are always here. The state meetings are covered by either Marilyn or Carol, Carol also does a great job keeping our treasury duties met, our Secretary, Jean, is always present and on duty, sending in our paperwork and she also sends cards if she is told there are illnesses or deaths. Then there are several people like Virginia, Jean and I that try to get acquainted with the new ones that come so they feel welcomed, I also try to get their picture after they have been there a time or two for our get acquainted book. There are folks that bring neat things for the raffle table, that is very helpful as well. Of course our faithful performers are very necessary if we want a music program to listen to, smile.  I know I probably missed acknowledging some, so if you do something else you are important too & I say a "Big Thank You "on behalf of the organization to each and every one who does anything, great or small to make it all work out!
Just a note about some who have had health issues: Gene, with broken hip, is still in Rehab but is making good progress, Betty Miller is out of the hospital and getting some home-health assistance, Dennis is still having a big struggle, we should know more on how things are going with him soon, Eldon's making progress, Jean has some problems with her legs swelling, so please remember all these people in your prayers for their recovery.
There were 42 present this time at our September 12th KOFPS meeting, 16 performed, 4 people were visiting for the first time.  Ashlee & Julee Willson, a teen and a preteen, sang with our member, Stan Small. They sang, Diggin Up Bones, Wings of a Dove, and Power in the Blood, it was a special treat to have them with us and hope they can come again.  If you plan to compete in 2009 convention, be aware that you only have Nov./Dec. left to complete your 5 necessary appearances in order to qualify.
We will have election of officers in December, so please turn in your nominations for officers to Jean, 913-592-3634, before November for the positions that we have. It's not much of an election if they don't have someone to run against, ha. Make sure your nominees are willing to serve in the position for which you are nominating them. Every office is one year with the exception of State Representative and Alt. State Representative.   The secretary will be looking for a person to write up the article for the newsletter, starting Jan. 2009. We have forms for purchasing 2009 trophies available, so make your selection now!
Enjoy the great fall weather and the wonderful colors of the season while we have them, the scene will change again soon. Thanks for listening, Smile, Sylvia Landis

Jerry and Alice Derfler, new residents of Dodge City have been coming tour meetings and they had house guests from Sweden so brought them along to listen. Don Morgan, a member from Vancouver was visiting relatives in Scott City and Healy so they came and sang for us too. Thanks, all of you for coming and sharing your day.
We had a crowd of 53 people and 19 of those provided our music. Hope everyone enjoyed the afternoon. As usual we had our break - had delicious food as usual. Thanks so much! If anyone has any ideas to improve our meetings or something they would like changed please let us know. It takes all of us to have a good program and afternoon for everyone to enjoy.
IN January 2008, I told our crowd that during 2007 we had 478 people that had attended our jam sessions and lets see if we could do better for 2008. Well, as of September 14th included, we have had 444 so far that have attended our programs. I know I have worked hard to keep people coming and reminding them to come and bring a friend or relative - and I want to say "Thank You" to all you other people that have worked to make it better for everyone. So please come the second Sunday of each month at 2:00 pm and bring someone along to join in and have a nice afternoon of fun food and friends. Let's all enjoy the nice fall weather while it lasts. See all of you next month.

Third Friday

De Soto Chapter
Sandy Hale

  WHERE:  32905 W 84th St,

De Soto, KS 66018
  WHEN:  5:00pm, Jam 3:00pm
Delphia Danner - The DeSoto chapter welcomed 43 attendees at our Sept. 19 chapter meeting.  Seventeen musicians entertained an enthusiastic audience.  A responsive audience encourages us to do our best.  We had a delicious potluck meal.  It's a good thing we have cleanup and tear down to do afterward or we would all be packing on the pounds from that good food.
Junior performer T. J. Nigus from Spring Hill performed in preparation for convention next spring.  His mother Sharon also performed.  First City Leavenworth's President Georgeanna Tully treated us to some amazing yodeling,  Also from First City was Sam Dominguez who plays beautiful saxophone.  In addition we welcomed performers Lois White and Ted Propst from Santa Fe Trails.
During the evening Secretary Sandy Hale tendered her resignation due to pressing demands on her time.  As a result President Leo Shaw asked me to fill in as acting secretary until the end of the year.  To date I have received a slate of nominations for 2009 officers to be voted on at the November meeting this year.  The list will be available at the Oct. 17 chapter meeting.  Thank you to all who are willing to serve, not only in an official capacity but also to those of you who just pitch in and help where needed.  We hope to see as many of you as possible at the next meeting.

Third Sunday

Iola Chapter
Don Brooks

  WHERE:  505 N Buckeye St,

            Iola, KS 66749
  WHEN:  1:00pm
Well we had a bigger crowd of 30 this time with 10 players. A new member for 2009 in Virgil Warren. Gary Bell, Earl's brother came and played. Did a fine job too. We are still working on cutting our monthly expenses. A member is talking to the powers that be, about lowering the rent. Let's all wish him good luck. I found out Sunday that I will be going to Lakin in October. Looking at the trip on the net, I believe their State Rep. deserves a big pat on the back for making the effort of attending every three months. Forty dollars for a half tank of gas yesterday. May have to buy one of those emergency crank-up radios. Stay home and listen to music. Grandkids don't think twice about spending a dollar for a candy bar. Look sideways when I tell them I could have bought twenty of them for that when I was their age. Speaking of age Isaw a cartoon of an elderly lady on a porch swing saying "I'm getting so old my friends in Heaven probably think I didn't make it!"

The Flint Hills Chapter met on Sunday afternoon on September 21, 2008. It was a perfect day. The temperature was in the low 80's and a beautiful sunny day. I guess the day was why we love to live in Kansas. Everyone must have felt the same way because we had a very good turn-out. We had 53 attending with 17 musicians. The music was really good and we are sure that there is nowhere that we could go for better music and such a reasonable price.
Our guests were the 3 Gee's, YC, Glenn and Millie Woolaway, Gene and Helen Matney and Norma Murphy and Dee Olson from KV. We enjoy having guests to enjoy our music.
Keith Redding , a long time member of Fiddlers and Pickers Passed away. He did love to dance and always kicked his heels together when he was having a specially good time. He always tried to enter the competition at the State Convention. He was quite a special individual. Do come and join us for a fun time whenever you can.

Cow Creek Chapter met on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Faris School in Hutchinson at 1 o'clock on September 29th. There were 35 folks attending, which includes 16 performers.
Thank you, Ed Rudolph, for being our master of ceremonies and for playing your beautiful violin that you built yourself. It is truly a work of art. It's a wonderful treasure and you play so well. Ed is teaching Sylvon Davis to play the fiddle. A fine student with a fine teacher. All the music was exceptionally good.
It's always enjoyable to listen to Doris and Marvin Gough. I'm glad they like to come to sing and play for and with us.
Everyone who comes to play and sing is appreciated for his or her talents and ability . . . helping us all enjoy the wonderful music our KOFP&S members love so much.
Thanks again for all the helpers. We appreciate the refreshment team very much, the officers and those who help with chairs and floors etc. Next month October 26th come to Faris School for good fellowship and music!

Well, we got off to a great start this month with several of our regulars back from the disabled list.  Back-Up Ethel was Back.  Mama and the Good Rev. Bell were back and Richard and Agnes Pearman were finally back .  It seems like 4 months since we have seen the Pearmans, Oh wait, it has been 4 months.  In that time those two kids celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.  Richard had pictures of the party .   Looks like they had a lot of fun.   We also had Jewell back again, but she still is a little shaky, but its good to have everyone back .
Unfortunately,  we were missing the Barrs and we were informed that the birthday boy last month, Freddy Blevins, was in the Hospital. Hope he gets to feeling better.
We were pleased to have guests from the Flint Hills chapter, Wayne and Louise Stoll come to our meeting .   It is great to have other chapter members come to just listen or Perform.
The Day started with the luncheon of goulash that I brought and the trimmings from other members.
Remember next month I`m bringing BEEF STOGANOFF .
I appointed a nominating committee of Lorraine Barr, Jewell Bieker and Noble Patchett.   They have till Nov, to get the Nominees.
The music program started at 1:00. We had 12 performers and an attendance of 38,   the entertainers were; FRED TAYLOR, A.J. BIEKER, RICHARD PEARMAN, EARL BELL, NORM SORENSON, DON BROOKS, BUD DENNER, WAYNE STOLL, BACK-UP ETHEL PARKS AND KENNY, MARGARET AND BLAINE GEE.   thank you all so much for sharing you talent.  It was a great program and a wonderful day.
Till next month, bring a friend and make a new member.   Blaine
